Save 1 Million Lives -A Project for Organ Donation

By DTI Foundation | DTI Foundation

Project Overview

DTI Foundation is a non profit organization based in Barcelona dedicated to improving organ and tissue donation and transplantation systems worldwide through training, consultancy, and capacity building. This project supports our mission to strengthen health systems so that more patients in need can access life saving transplantation.

Our approach focuses on professional education, institutional development, and the implementation of effective donation frameworks. Rather than acting at the level of individual transplants, we work at the system level to generate sustainable and long term impact.

Activities Implemented

During this reporting period, the project has supported the following core activities:

  1. Professional training programs
We have continued delivering specialized training programs for healthcare professionals involved in organ donation and transplantation. These programs include structured courses for donor coordinators, intensive care professionals, surgeons, and hospital managers. The training combines clinical knowledge, organizational strategies, ethical principles, and communication skills.

  2. Capacity building and system strengthening
We have worked with national and regional health authorities to improve governance models, clinical pathways, and hospital level organization related to donation processes. This includes advisory work to enhance identification of potential donors, optimize donation after circulatory death programs, and strengthen coordination between hospitals and transplant centers.

  3. International collaboration and knowledge transfer
Through partnerships with public institutions and healthcare organizations, we have facilitated knowledge exchange between experienced donation systems and countries seeking to develop or expand their programs. This collaborative model promotes sustainability and local ownership.

  4. Educational resources and technical support
The project has supported the development and dissemination of educational materials, structured curricula, and operational tools designed to improve clinical practice and organizational performance in donation and transplantation.

Impact

While system transformation takes time, the activities supported by this project contribute directly to:

  • Improved identification and management of potential donors

  • Strengthened hospital coordination structures

  • Enhanced professional competencies

  • Increased awareness of ethical and quality standards

  • Greater institutional commitment to donation and transplantation

By reinforcing health systems rather than isolated interventions, the project contributes to sustainable growth in organ donation and transplantation capacity. Each improvement in governance, training, and coordination translates into more opportunities to save lives.

Challenges

As with many international health system initiatives, challenges include variability in local infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and resource availability. Cultural perceptions of donation and organizational readiness also differ across contexts.

Our strategy remains focused on tailored, context specific solutions developed in close collaboration with local stakeholders.

Next Steps

In the coming period, we will:

  • Continue expanding professional training activities

  • Strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms within supported programs

  • Consolidate partnerships with health authorities and hospitals

  • Further develop structured educational pathways for donation professionals

We remain committed to advancing safe, ethical, and efficient donation systems worldwide.

We sincerely thank GlobalGiving and all supporters for enabling this work. Strengthening donation systems is a long term investment in public health, and your support contributes to sustainable impact and lives saved.

With gratitude,

DTI Foundation
