The efforts to proliferate good health and wellbeing of children with hydrocephalus has projected to stiffened issues among the parents and the country as a whole. This project aims at supporting the surgical operation of 10 babies, within the ages of three to twenty four months, battling with hydrocephalus at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital ( KATH) at Kumasi, Ghana.
In Ghana, babies with hydrocephalus never succeed to get treatment; such of the many reasons are 'poverty, bad infrastructures, long distance to health facilities and transportation cost'. Although there is health insurance, the cost of Ventriculoperitoneal shunts for neurosurgical operation is above GHC5000. How can a farmer who earns not more than GHC500 pay for the bills if in such a situation?
Most caregivers and children with hydrocephalus are ignored by family and society which have caused many to end up on the street, orphanage homes and in worst cases, death. Therefore, intensive support will reduce the economic burden on the parents and save lives of babies with hydrocephalus who are likely to lose their lives. It will save parents from going to streets to beg for alms to take care of the surgery of their ward.
1. Reduction in the mortality rate associated with hydrocephalus in Ghana. 2. It will contribute to reduce the disability rate in the country. 3. It will also contribute in the reduction of the high economic burden associated with hydrocephalus on caregivers.
