In parts of Nigeria, over 800 newborns die each day, and many of these deaths are linked to preterm birth and breathing problems. Most rural health centers lack oxygen machines and cannot care for preterm babies. This project will help save 50 babies by providing oxygen machines, nasal cannulas, and emergency supplies to health centers that serve low-income families who cannot afford private care.
Thousands of babies born too early in Nigeria face breathing challenges due to underdeveloped lungs. Most public and rural health centers do not have oxygen machines or backup supplies. Families often lose their babies because they cannot afford care at private hospitals. Without help, these babies are at risk of death within hours of their earthly existence.
This project will supply oxygen machines and emergency kits to public and rural clinics that serve the poorest families. Clinics will also receive training to use and maintain the machines. Oxygen delivery tools like nasal cannulas will be stocked to support 50 preterm babies during the critical first weeks after birth.
Once installed, the oxygen machines will continue to save many more babies beyond the 50 targeted. Health workers will gain skills to manage newborn emergencies, and local clinics will reduce newborn deaths. The project will also reduce pressure on overloaded hospitals by strengthening care closer to home.
