Out-of-Hospital sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has claimed hundreds of lives in Lagos. With a bystander intervention through Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & correct use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED), SCA victim's survival chance is INCREASED BY 31.4%. CeSAHA is set to increase the availability, accessibility & functionality of AEDs; number of trained first aiders in strategic locations; sensitize the importance of timely response & create National AED Registry
A critical gap in Nigeria's Healthcare system is the lack of a functional and well-coordinated Emergency Medical Service (EMS), leading to preventable mortality and morbidity. A painful incident of the demise of a medical specialist following a sudden cardiac arrest among his trained colleagues happened. It was noticed that there was no access to a functional AED. Probably if AED was available, accessible and deployed immediately after SCA, he might have been revived.
Increasing the availability of affordable AEDs at strategic locations in the country by ensuring that those who can afford, not only provide for their facility/organization, but also purchase for another target area that cannot afford the AED through Buy-One-Donate-One scheme. Train 1,000 people on the knowledge and skills required to give Basic Life Support (administering CPR & use of AED), thus increasing the survival chance of 5000 or more sudden cardiac arrest victims in Lagos.
This project will reduce mortality and morbidity rates by enhancing Public Access Defibrillation in order to increase survival rate in people with Out of Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest (OHSCA). It will also train 1,000 people on Basic Life Support to save dying lives, thus contributing to the Medical Emergency Response of the country.
