Summary

Cancer is a leading cause of childhood mortality, especially in lower-middle-income countries like Colombia. At our children's hospital, we have a specialized pediatric oncology center offering comprehensive care to all regional children. Our aim is to boost survival rates through three key pillars: timely diagnosis, advanced treatments with cutting-edge technology, and holistic support during treatment. This approach promotes both recovery and emotional well-being for our young patients.

Challenge

According to the WHO, a child's likelihood of surviving cancer varies by country: over 80% are cured in high-income countries, while less than 30% are cured in many low- or middle-income countries. In Colombia, the most common childhood cancers are leukemia, brain and central nervous system tumors, and lymphomas. The Global Cancer Observatory estimates that in 2022, there were 2,115 new cases of childhood cancer in Colombia, with an adjusted incidence rate of 14.0 new cases per 100,000 children.

Solution

We have a specialized service with 18 hospitalization beds, 10 chemotherapy cubicles, and conduct over 300 consultations monthly. Intensive care units are available. Our team includes pediatric oncologists, hematologists, and hematologist-oncologists. As the national leader in intra-arterial chemotherapy, we integrate all hospital areas. Patients receive comprehensive care including oncology, nutrition, psychology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain management, and family therapy.

Long-Term Impact

We are dedicated to saving the lives of hundreds of children each year through early diagnoses and timely treatments, led by experts and cutting-edge technology. We focus on the human aspect, recognizing the unique emotional needs of cancer patients and promoting special projects to help them cope with their treatment process. We perform around 130 chemotherapies and 85 hospital discharges each month. For us, the most significant impact is saving a child and strengthening their family.
