Project Report | Jun 25, 2020
Samuel, a little boy full of illusions

By Laura Botero | Project Leader

Little Samuel arrived at our Children's Hospital 4 months after being diagnosed in a clinic in Bogota city with bilateral Retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer that begins in the retina, the photosensitive lining in the interior of the eye and that most often affects young children.

His main symptom and the reason why his mother decided to consult him, was the appearance of a white reflection and a small deviation in both eyes, which was confirmed in an ophthalmology consultation. Samuel and his mother went through different clinics where they performed systemic chemotherapies and finally referred him to our Children's Hospital in Medellin, to the Retinoblastoma program.

When he arrived at the Hospital, our specialists found his disease a little advanced, so they decided to hospitalize him and do all the necessary procedures to treat him properly. Here he underwent the first intra-arterial chemotherapy, by which he was given medication directly into the circulation of his eyes.

His mother feels very grateful to the Hospital and the Retinoblastoma program, she says that the treatment she has received has been excellent and very efficient and she thanks our professionals because they as an instrument of God have done many things for her little one.

Samuel and his mother currently live in Bogota and travel to Medellín to carry out the treatments of the little one, but because of COVID 19, he is finishing his treatment in Bogota and still has the accompaniment of our medical specialists.
