Save a School with Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT)

Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) adopted the Government Tamil Higher Primary School in Murphy Town, Bangalore  3 years ago when the school buildings, toilets, drinking water facility were all in a run down condition and the surrounding ground was overgrown with thorny weeds. ACT worked hard to mobilise funds for repairing and renovating the infrastructure of the school. As a result, now  94 children studying in the school in clean and accessible environment.

Infrastructure

ACT set up a science lab and computer lab in the Govt. School and appointed a teacher to teach the  practical application of scientific  concepts through live experiments. It is gratifying to report that the school children love these live demonstrations and eagerly participate in the,. ACT has also setup a Library, built a new Kitchen and Watchman’s room, rebuilt the Toilets and the Drinking water facility . All the rooms are well ventilated and have electricity. ACT has handed over the watchman’s room to a family which now provides the security for the school and the children. ACT prepares a special porridge mix keeping in mind the nutritional needs of growing children, and this with jaggery to sweeten the porridge is supplied to the school children. The porridge and milk for the children are now prepared in the new clean, and well lit kitchen. The garden is maintained by a gardener employed by the Trust. It is de-weeded regularly and the stone benches and walls of the park were painted recently. The children and the teachers are proud of their garden with bright flowers and growing fruit trees. The fence was redone and bricks were arranged around the plants. Recently, ACT has provided the BSNL telephone and internet connection in the school so as to enable the children to access the internet on the computers provided by the Trust to enhance their learning. ACT distributed sandals for 47 old students in govt school.    

Academics

The school reopened on 1st June, and ACT volunteers,a ACT appointed science and Computer teacher and theACT program coordinator  are back to assist the teachers and students with their academic work, especially in English and Maths.

Volunteering

ACT facilitates the CSR activities in the school.

1. 10 Volunteers from Thomson Reuters came on 18th July 2016 and taught English for 45 students for 20 hours, all together.
2. 3 Volunteers from France taught the students Jewellery making, took Computer classes, Drawing and Painting and Flow of English classes for 30 days - every day for 4 hours .  

ACT’s work in the school is ongoing and a lot more has to be done. The school has a huge ground behind it, which can be utilized very effectively for the benefit of the children.  

Appeal

Since the school is an almost hundred year old heritage building, there are many infrastructure issues such as leaking roofs, damp walls and broken floor tiles.

Currently ACT is in the process of consulting experts as to whether the roof tiles have to be replaced or whether putting a tarpaulin sheet above the tiles would take care of the problem, at least temporarily.

Lack of funds is constraining us from doing more.  We appeal for more funds through global giving, so that the poverty stricken parents and their underprivileged children are attracted by the facilities and amenities and come back to school regularly.
