Save a School with Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT)

This is a story of a boy called Arvind , a student of the Government Tamil  Higher Primary School, Murphy Town,Bangalore.

Arvind  is studying in 7th standard. He comes from a very poor family, his parents are daily wage labourers. Arvind is the youngest among  the four siblings. He is an average student and  is not encouraged  or supported by his family  to get an decent education or even attend school regularly.His parents go to work early in the morning and return late at  night His older brothers are working but are not supporting the family financially.The parents are expecting Arvind to work to supplement their meagre income. In spite of all these difficultie,Arvind is determined  to attend school  regularly and get a basic education.

Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) has adopted the Government Tamil Higher Primary School in MurphyTown, Bangalore. After the adoption,we have been working hard to increase the student strength of the school and to raise funds to repair and maintain  the existing infrastructure.

These children are first generation literates, so they do not have the motivation to study or to continue their education. We have been providing all the basic academic support and school necessities like books,shoes,stationery to the children of the school. We distribute a healthy porridge every morning and goodies to all the students during special celebrations like Childrens day or Christmas.

We at ACT motivate the students to come to the school regularly by engaging volunteers to spend time with the children regularly.We also have volunteers from different organisations interacting with the children

• Volunteers from ISB visited the school and had music  and dance therapy classes for the  the students. They played different musical instruments and danced with them. They also sponsored some sports equipment for the school, took individual photographs of all children and distributed snacks.  These volunteers visit the school every Saturday.They also take spoken english classes for the children since this is a vernacular medium school..
• ACT hired a JCB for a day  clear the grounds behind the school  to make  football and throwball fields. Children are very happy now and play in the ground every day.  
• Thomson Reuters volunteers visited the school and engaged all the children by conducting English and Math classes.
• We organised a comprehensive health camp for  students , teachers and for the supporting staff of the school 74 people  benefitted from the camp where doctors checked for physical ,dental and optical problems.We also had blood and urine tests done for each of them.
• 6 ACT volunteers and staff go to  the school regularly and help  the students by teaching english,maths and craft

The original school building is very old built in 1924  and it has been declared as a  heritage building.It has many infrastructure issues such as leaking roofs, damp walls and broken floor tiles. Lack of funds is constraining us from doing more work to make this school a happy place for these underprivileged children.  We appeal for more funds through Global Giving, so that the poverty stricken parents can send their children to a safe and cheerful place..
