Emergency Response in Kalehe - A Call for Action

By AGIZO JOSUE | Coordinator

Project Summary

In Katashola Camp, located in Kalehe territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), over 200 children under the age of five have died in just two months due to malaria and severe malnutrition. This displaced persons camp, isolated and under the control of armed groups (M23), is facing an extreme humanitarian emergency. Access is nearly impossible due to ongoing insecurity and frequent flooding.

In response to this silent but devastating crisis, our project aims to deliver life-saving emergency aid, including medical care, therapeutic food, clean water, and mobile health support to displaced children and mothers. Aid is transported exclusively via Lake Kivu, the only safe access route to Katashola.

Project Objectives

  • Save lives immediately through malaria treatment, therapeutic food distribution, and clean water access.
  • Reduce under-five mortality linked to malaria and malnutrition.
  • Establish ongoing access to healthcare and clean water for displaced families.
  • Strengthen community resilience to better cope with future health and humanitarian crises.

Planned Activities

  • Regular transport of humanitarian aid via Lake Kivu.
  • Distribution of water purification kits, malaria treatments, and therapeutic food.
  • Deployment of mobile health teams for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Training of community health volunteers to support sustainable child health efforts.

Project Progress

  • The first priority beneficiaries have already been identified.
  • We are currently in the process of selecting trainers and learners who will play a central role in awareness and health response on the ground.
  • The official launch of activities is scheduled for November 2025.
  • Through our partnership with GlobalGiving, we have already raised $65 USD towards our total goal of $42,500 USD.
  • This fundraising campaign is ongoing, and we are confident that we will reach our goal thanks to the support of our donors.

Estimated Budget

  • Total project budget: $42,500 USD
  • Amount raised to date: $65 USD
  • Main partner: GlobalGiving
  • Funding sources: Private donations, humanitarian donors, international partners

Call to Donors

We are issuing an urgent and heartfelt appeal to all donors, philanthropists, foundations, and engaged citizens:
Every donation counts. Every minute lost costs a life. Support this high-impact humanitarian project. Together, we can prevent more deaths, restore hope, and save hundreds of vulnerable children.

We extend our deepest thanks to all who have already contributed to this initiative. Thanks to you, a chain of solidarity is in motion. Let us continue this effort together. The lives of children in Kalehe depend on it.

Together, let’s save the children of Katashola.
Thank you for your compassion and commitment.
