Saving Children from Malaria in Kalehe

By AGIZO | Coordinator

Katashola Camp in Kalehe, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis. Displaced children and mothers are living with very limited access to food, safe drinking water, and essential healthcare. According to information available to our project team, more than 200 children under the age of five have died in the camp in recent months, with malaria and severe malnutrition among the major threats. Ongoing insecurity, displacement, flooding, and restricted humanitarian access have made an already critical situation even more difficult. For families who have been forced to leave their homes, reaching basic medical care can mean the difference between life and death.

Our project, Save Children from Malaria in Kalehe Camp in Congo, was created to respond to this urgent need. The project aims to bring emergency medical supplies, malaria treatment, nutritious therapeutic food, safe water, water-purification materials, and mobile health support to vulnerable children and mothers. Because road access is extremely difficult, the response is designed to use Lake Kivu as the principal access route to Katashola. At this stage, we are in the preparation and resource-mobilization phase, including the identification of trainers and learners involved in the planned community activities. We are committed to ensuring that implementation is organized responsibly and that support reaches the people who need it most.

The total funding target for the project is US$42,500. So far, we have received US$52, an important first contribution that gives us encouragement but also shows how much remains to be mobilized. Our partnership with GlobalGiving gives this local initiative an opportunity to reach a wider community of international donors and build the support needed to move from preparation to life-saving action. We know that reaching the full target will require the generosity of many people, and we will continue to share honest updates on progress, challenges, and results. GlobalGiving requires project partners to provide regular project reports, helping donors follow how their support contributes to the work. (GlobalGiving)

We thank every donor who has already stood with the children and families of Kalehe. Your support, however small, is a message to displaced families that they have not been forgotten. We also extend our sincere appreciation to GlobalGiving for providing a trusted platform through which this urgent local response can connect with supporters around the world. We invite individuals, foundations, community groups, and international partners to join this effort. Together, we can help provide children with treatment, nourishment, clean water, and a chance to survive. Every contribution can help bring hope closer to a child in Katashola Camp.
