Save the Children of Kalehe

By AGIZO JOSUE | CORDINATOR

Prepared for partners and donors, in collaboration with GlobalGiving.

1. Humanitarian Context

In Katashola Camp, located in Kalehe (DR Congo), the humanitarian situation is extremely alarming. In just two months, more than 200 children under the age of five have died due to severe malaria, acute malnutrition, and the total absence of clean water.
The camp is isolated, controlled by armed groups, and extremely difficult to access. Ongoing violence and heavy flooding have destroyed most roads, making Lake Kivu the only safe route to reach displaced families.

These conditions leave children and mothers without food, medical care, or even the minimum health protection they need to survive.

2. Project Objective

This project aims to save the lives of children and mothers in Katashola through rapid and targeted emergency assistance.
Our commitments include:

  • Providing malaria treatment for both simple and severe cases.
  • Distributing ready-to-use therapeutic food for malnourished children.
  • Supplying clean water and water-purification kits.
  • Deploying a mobile health team capable of delivering emergency care and nutritional monitoring.
  • Strengthening access to health, water, and nutrition over time to reduce child mortality sustainably.

3. Intervention Strategy

Humanitarian aid will be transported by boat across Lake Kivu, the only safe access route.
Our intervention includes:

  • Regular transport of medical supplies, food, and water.
  • Setting up secure distribution points.
  • Community follow-up for vulnerable children.
  • Establishing a permanent emergency treatment system.

Our approach focuses on safety, rapid response, local coordination, and continuity of care.

4. Global Budget

The total budget required to implement this life-saving project is $42,500.
To date, thanks to GlobalGiving, $36 has already been raised.

Although we are still at the beginning, our partnership with GlobalGiving will enable us to reach the full goal by expanding our visibility and credibility to international donors.

5. Current Project Status

We are currently in the phase of:

  • Selecting trainers and medical teams,
  • Identifying priority beneficiaries,
  • Planning the first logistical deliveries.

The operational launch of the project is scheduled for November 2025.

6. Expected Impact

With your support, we will be able to:

  • Immediately reduce deaths caused by malaria.
  • Stabilize the nutritional condition of the most vulnerable children.
  • Prevent future waves of avoidable child mortality.
  • Strengthen local capacity so families can better withstand future crises.

Every donation, even the smallest, represents a meal, a treatment, a life saved.

7. Call for Solidarity

We urgently call on all donors, partner organizations, and people of goodwill:
The children of Kalehe need you.
Their survival depends on our collective action.

Thanks to our current donors – whom we sincerely thank – the first steps have already been taken.
But much more is needed, and every contribution is crucial.

By supporting this project, you choose to save lives where children have no other hope.

8. Acknowledgments

We express our deepest gratitude to all those who have already contributed. Your generosity brings hope to the families of Katashola.
Together, with GlobalGiving and your support, we can reach our objective and stop these preventable deaths.
