Saving Kalehe Children from Malaria

By JOSUE AGIZO | COORDINATOR

1. Context and Rationale

In Katashola Camp, located in Kalehe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the humanitarian situation is critical. In just two months, more than 200 children under the age of five have died due to malaria and severe malnutrition.

This camp is difficult to access and affected by ongoing insecurity. It suffers from a severe lack of healthcare, clean water, and food. Violence and flooding have worsened an already alarming crisis, leaving thousands of displaced families without life-saving assistance.

2. Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to significantly reduce child mortality linked to malaria and malnutrition in Katashola Camp.

More specifically, the project aims to:

  • Provide emergency medical care to children and mothers
  • Distribute ready-to-use therapeutic food
  • Ensure access to clean water through purification kits
  • Deploy mobile health teams
  • Stabilize children's nutritional status
  • Prevent further deaths in the short and medium term

3. Intervention Strategy

Humanitarian aid will be transported Lake Kivu, which is currently the only viable access route to the camp.

Planned actions include:

  • Delivery of antimalarial medicines
  • Distribution of emergency food supplies
  • Installation of water treatment solutions
  • Direct intervention by mobile health teams

At the same time, a phase of identifying trainers and beneficiaries is underway to ensure effective and locally adapted implementation. The project is scheduled to begin in November 2025.

4. Expected Results

Short-term:

  • Immediate reduction in deaths caused by malaria and malnutrition
  • Improvement in the health condition of vulnerable children
  • Access to clean drinking water for displaced families

Long-term:

  • Strengthened community resilience
  • Improved access to basic healthcare
  • Sustainable reduction in child mortality in the Kalehe region

5. Project Budget

The total project budget is estimated at USD 42,500.

So far, USD 36 has been raised through collaboration with GlobalGiving. Although this amount is still modest, it represents an encouraging first step toward achieving this vital goal.

6. Partnership and Mobilization

The collaboration with GlobalGiving is a key driver in mobilizing the necessary resources and ensuring international visibility for the project. Through this partnership and collective effort, we are confident that the fundraising goal will be achieved.

7. Call for Support

Today, every contribution matters. Behind every donation, there is a life that can be saved.

We make a sincere appeal to all donors, partners, and people of goodwill: your support is essential. Together, we can prevent more children from dying due to lack of care, food, and clean water.

8. Acknowledgment

We express our deep gratitude to everyone who has already contributed to this project. Your generosity, no matter the amount, is a source of hope for these children and their families.

Thank you for believing in this cause and for standing with the most vulnerable.

Together, let us act now to save lives.
