A Rural Refuge, A Family's Unwavering Love: Three Cows Sold for Hope

For seven-year-old Frank from rural Gokwe, 347 km west of Harare, Zimbabwe, life changed drastically when his parents' marriage ended in South Africa. Left in the care of his loving maternal grandparents, Frank’s journey became one of resilience, anchored by his family’s unwavering love and sacrifice.As Frank's health declined, his grandparents made unimaginable sacrifices, selling three cows and a goat in a desperate bid to find answers. They sought help from local prophets, traditional healers, and clinics and hospitals in Kadoma, Chademoyo, and Bulawayo, but the silent adversary—Wilm's Tumour (Kidney Cancer)—remained hidden.

"I was losing hope," Frank’s mother recalls, her voice trembling. She left her job in South Africa, stepping away from her role as the family's breadwinner, to join her parents in caring for her son. Returning to rural Gokwe, she faced not only financial challenges but also the stigma and isolation often associated with cancer. "Many relatives in Harare, hundreds of kilometres away, were fearful, thinking cancer was contagious. Their love was real, but even they were afraid."

For Frank's mother, staying with relatives meant a life of discomfort and uncertainty. "We felt like a burden," she remembers, struggling to adjust in an unfamiliar city while trying to provide for her son.

When they finally reached Parirenyatwa Hospital, Frank's condition was critical. Emaciated with a swollen abdomen and intense pain, he was unable to speak, only able to look at his mother with silent plea. "I thought I'd lose him," she says, painting a heart-wrenching image of her son’s suffering.

Then, KidzCan intervened. They took on the financial costs of Frank's treatment, offering him and his family a lifeline and a new home at the Rainbow Children’s Village. This refuge became a sanctuary, allowing Frank and his family to focus on healing and hope.

"At Rainbow Children's Village, we finally found solace," Frank’s mother says, her relief palpable. "KidzCan saved my son's life. Without their support, I wouldn’t have him here today."

Today, Frank is defying the odds. He’s undergoing radiotherapy, and his smile speaks of resilience and joy. "Frank’s up and running now," his mother beams. "He’s regained his speech, and his laughter brightens our days."

For Frank’s family, KidzCan represents so much more than medical aid. "Their support means everything," his mother affirms. "KidzCan has given us hope, restored our faith, and shown us that even in our darkest hours, there is light. Cancer may not be contagious, but love and kindness are—and KidzCan embodies that every day."
