KidzCan Activities

By Daniel Mckenzie | Executive Director

GlobalGiving update on KidzCan Activities.

KidzCan has been for the last six months on a campaign to raise much awareness as possible especially in primary schools. The month of June was a celebration of our survivors as we honoured them with a Tree of Life, with their hand prints.

May, had a very successful event that saw close to 2000 parents and students coming through to walk for a worthy cause in the jungle. In the same month an awareness campaign trail was taken to the Salvation Army Business Forum during the Africa Day Commemorations where the KidzCan childhood cancer story was shared.

The month of May concluded with a visit at St Peter’s Clever School in Chishawasha, Harare for the commissioning of a water tank and taps in the KidzCan-led water project. The KidzCan team took the opportunity to bring childhood cancer awareness to students and teachers.

June saw KidzCan join the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe in celebrating Survivors Day as Survivors Month kicked in. The day had several activities lined up with painting of the mural Tree of Life being the major highlight.

This was followed up on the same day with celebrations at KidzCan offices, which culminated in the formation of a Survivors group that will champion the coordination of activities and act as a support group for the survivors and those currently suffering from childhood cancer.

One of our survivirs ,who is an amputee due to bone cancer is now a second year student at the University of Columbia, in New York, studying Neuroscience. What an achievement.

The KidzCan Winter-handout event on the 15th of June was a big day with the team distributing blankets, clothes, hats, and books to patients in the hospital as it is winter time in Zimbabwe. Recipients are largely from a disadvantaged background so the goods go a long way in filling the gaps.

Due to the lobbying by KidzCan, Zimbabwe has been chosen by the WHO to be the fourth country in Africa to be a focus country for the WHO Global Initiative to increase the survival rate of children suffering from cancer to 60% by the year 2030.

With continued support from GlobalGiving donors, we will achieve this as, “no child should be left behind”.

As always, we thank our donors for their continued support to childhood cancer in Zimbabwe. By the end of May 2022, we had registered 200 new patients, increasing our support for the year to 900 patients in 2022.

The challenges in the public sector, where diagnostic machines are not working, has made KidzCan need more funding to take patients to the private sector for diagnostics testing, in order to help the doctors, create the correct treatment protocol.

And so, the need for support continues to be a challenge, but with GlobalGiving support we persevere and continue to make a difference in the community.

Thank you ALL for your continued support.
