Community Rangers Trained and Equipped

In the past months, a group of six community rangers, including four women and two men, were trained and equipped to effectively conduct research and biomonitoring in the field. These rangers were provided with monthly stipends and given COVID-19 kits to ensure their safety while working.

The rangers were trained in the use of equipment and data collection techniques, including the combined method of reconnaissance survey and camera trapping. This method was used to establish the new status of several threatened species, including the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee and Cross River Gorilla.

The results of the research are both exciting and concerning. Thirteen species, including monkeys, bush pigs, duikers, foxes, bush babies, pangolins, porcupines, mongooses, squirrels, frogs, and birds, were identified in the sanctuary. Most importantly, a total of 28 signs of the Cross River Gorilla and 151 signs of the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee were recorded, providing evidence of the presence and abundance of these threatened species.

However, the research also identified major threats to the wildlife in the sanctuary, including agriculture, hunting, and tree cutting. These activities are putting the survival of these precious species at risk.

Thanks to the training and equipment provided to the community rangers, valuable data has been collected to aid in the protection of these threatened species. With ongoing efforts to educate local communities and raise awareness about the importance of preserving wildlife, we can hope to see these species thrive in their natural habitats for years to come.
