Protecting the Cross River Gorilla - Quarterly Update

By Arend de Haas | Director

Over the past three months, the Cross River Gorilla programme has experienced a temporary pause in field activities. This pause is due to the ongoing Anglophone crisis in South West Cameroon, combined with the national election period, which has limited safe access to project sites and the ability to engage with local communities.

While direct conservation interventions could not be implemented during this period, our team has remained fully engaged in planning, coordination, and risk assessment. Preparations are underway to resume activities as soon as conditions allow, ensuring the safety of both staff and local partners. These preparations include reviewing site protocols, ensuring logistical readiness, and strengthening communication with Village Forest Management Committees (VFMCs).

Of course, we remain fully committed to the long-term conservation of the critically endangered Cross River gorilla. Training and field activities are scheduled to resume at the end of November, and progress on bio-monitoring, community engagement, and habitat restoration will continue.

We sincerely thank our donors for their understanding and ongoing support during this challenging period. Your contributions remain vital to securing the future of this endangered species and the habitats on which it depends.
