A new diving (ferruginous) duck was spotted recently in the Ellen Barnett Lake. This is great news as it came from outside the Zoo and has chosen to come and live at our lake.
The Zoo has been working to conserve and reintroduce this species, which has almost disappeared in the wild Israel. Until a decade ago, nesting pairs were found in Israeli wetlands, but their numbers have declined severely due to habitat destruction, pollution of water sources.
The arrival of a nature-born duck to the Zoo’s lake is a sign of the success of our reintroduction program which involves the controlled release of the ducks back into the wild in the hope that the population can be revived.
