The Baby Boom Continues!

By Nicole Wexler | Director of Development

Since we last reported to you, the number of Lesser kestrel chicks hatched at our National Center for Raptor Egg Incubation has risen to 24. In addition, 7 individuals have recently been released in the Jerusalem area and 25 individuals have been sent to Ramat Hanadiv in the north of Israel for release into the wild.

In addition, 16 griffon vulture chicks have also hatched. In a heartwarming development, one of the chicks had problematic legs and would not have survived if hatched in the wild. Fortunately, our staff were able to provide physical therapy which allowed him to recover and be sent to the acclimatization area in Hai Bar Carmel Nature Reserve in the north of Israel in preparation for release into the wild.

To increase the genetic diversity of the Israeli breeding pairs housed here at the Zoo as well as those in the wild, we obtained some griffon vulture individuals from Yerevan Zoo in Armenia. Of those individuals received, 5 were placed in the Birds of Prey Aviary at the Zoo and the remaining individuals will be sent to Hai Bar Carmel Nature Reserve once they have completed their quarantine period.

Stay tuned for more exciting news in our next update!

Warmly,

The Avian Team at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo
