The weather has cooled and Jerusalem has experienced the first rains of the season. As the days become shorter, we are pleased to report that the chicks we told you about last time continue to thrive.
In our last report we also mentioned that, to increase the genetic diversity of the Israeli breeding pairs housed here at the Zoo as well as those in the wild, we obtained some griffon vulture individuals from Yerevan Zoo in Armenia. Of those individuals received, 6 were placed in the Birds of Prey Aviary at the Zoo and the remaining individuals were sent to Hai Bar Carmel Nature Reserve upon completion of their quarantine period.
We are hoping that breeding will begin within our Birds of Prey Aviary over the winter months however it would not be unusual if this does not occur given the relative immaturity of the new birds as well as their acclimatization to a new environment. Here’s to hoping that we’ll be able to report success in our next update.
