The first stage of the construction at Manambaro has been completed; the latrine and well have been built!
With the help of your incredible donations, we’ve been able to start work at Manambaro Lyee. Azafady’s construction team, along with Pioneer volunteers, have built a two-cubicle composting latrine and a well.
Before the construction students had to defecate openly in nearby bushes, or go home to use toilet facilities, since there were none on the school grounds. Combined with a lack of clean water for drinking or hand washing, this made a significant impact on students’ attendance and health. The construction of a latrine and well brings a new era for Manambaro Lycee, allowing students to access improved sanitation and clean water, and putting an end to open defecation around the school.
Alongside the building of new facilities, Azafady’s Community Health team have been supporting the community with their well and latrine management structures and will begin educational sessions later this year.
However, despite this exciting start we still need your help to finish the project. Manambaro Lycee currently only has the capacity for 200 students. This means that 500 students are turned away every year, and one entire year group is being taught in the town hall.
Azafady plans to build four new brick and concrete buildings allowing the students who currently are unable to study because of a lack of classroom space to attend school. In a region where 73% of the population are illiterate, being able to go to school could dramatically affect the futures of the children of Manambaro. Thank you to all those who have donated and to all those who are thinking of supporting the Manambaro Lycee.
