Care for Wild is the world's largest orphaned rhino sanctuary and specialises in the urgent rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned and injured rhinos affected by South Africa's poaching crisis. Rescued rhinos are brought to our purpose-built Intensive Care Unit and rehabilitation facility. With over 10 years of experience, our dedicated team rehabilitates both white and critically endangered black rhinos, preparing them for reintroduction and release into healthy and protected ecosystems.
Rescuing orphaned and injured rhinos is a race against time; without intervention, they will die. Rescued rhinos require specialist care in a rehabilitation facility equipped to address their complex nutritional, behavioural and medical needs. This demands a highly trained and dedicated veterinary and care team. Even after release, reintroduced rhinos require continuous monitoring and protection to ensure their survival.
Care for Wild works closely with rescue teams to execute successful operations, quickly transporting rhinos to our ICU for stabilisation and wound management. Our rehabilitation facility specialises in treating gunshot wounds, machete cuts and hyena attacks. Our experienced and knowledgable team delivers comprehensive care to support the rhinos in their recovery journey. Rehabilitated, rhinos are released into protected areas where they receive ongoing monitoring and 24/7 protection.
We actively mitigate the detrimental effects of rhino poaching by rescuing orphaned and injured rhinos. After rehabilitation, these rhinos are reintroduced into healthy and protected ecosystems, where they play a crucial role in repopulating their species and contributing to the rewilding of natural habitats. This strategic approach effectively reduces the impact of poaching on the national rhino herd and ensures their sustained survival within protected areas.
