Summary

SAFI is a 501(c)3 charitable organization founded by Ujwala Chintala in Florida, USA to fight for India's animals. India's nearly 80 million stray animals face not only a brutal climate and limited resources but must contend with a culture that views them as pests or threats. We are shelter and foster focussed, working to build a strong, compassionate animal welfare network in Hyderabad, India, providing shelter infrastructure, vet care, supplies, guidance, resources, education, and manpower.

Challenge

At any given time, up to 30 to 35 million stray dogs roam India's city streets; starving, lonely, and often injured because most people consider them to be lost causes. The few animal shelters that do exist are often overflowing and understaffed. Left alone and to their own devices, many of these animals will reproduce, filling the streets and endangering both their lives and those of others. India's animal welfare system struggles with a lack of personnel and capital.

Solution

Our programs include Rescue, clinic, spay/neuter, sanctuary, adoptions, education and cruelty. By rescuing, rehabilitating with vet care, TLC, and spaying/neutering, SAFI will prevent them from suffering and continuing to populate the streets. When animals cannot survive on the streets or find adoptive homes, we've got a sanctuary for them.SAFI's Education dept goal is to change the public opinion of many Indians who find street animals disgusting.

Long-Term Impact

We're fighting to help the animals no one else will. We hope to help animals in need by helping shelters, and independent rescues cover the costs of veterinary care, transportation, medicines, foster care, food, and equipment. With fewer animals on the streets and fewer abusers, we can slow the growth rate of strays and suffering homeless animals on the streets in India. We also hope to raise awareness of our work and improve human and stray animal relationships.
