Kinderboost: Helping U.S. kids get a strong start

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Across America, 1 in 5 children grows up in poverty. Of the counties with the highest poverty rates across the U.S., nearly 90% are rural. Because of circumstances beyond their control, millions of children never reach their full potential. It doesn’t have to be this way.

What does it mean to "go without" in America? It can mean no access to simple, but critical things like books, preschool, healthy foods, and places to play and exercise — things that help children thrive and grow in mind and body. It can mean no safety net in times of crisis — or being unable to see a future outside of poverty. We protect the nation’s most vulnerable children and give them early opportunities to learn so they can succeed in school and life.

One of our U.S Programs is KinderBoost, a two-week kindergarten summer readiness camp designed to ease the transition to a structured school setting. It provides children with opportunities to become familiar with their new school environment, make new friends, and engage in learning activities, building their confidence and social and emotional skills to enter school ready to succeed. The transition from home or an early care setting to kindergarten is also an opportunity to involve parents or guardians and create continuity in children’s educational environment.

“It does a lot for the kids to be able to meet some of the teachers and meet other new kids,” said the parent of one child who was enrolled in our KinderBoost camp. “It helped me to know what she should learn in order for me to help her.”
