HOME VISITING TO A FAMILY TO ASSESS MULNUTRITION

SUMMARY

Malnutrition remains a major burden among children aged 5–59 months, pregnant women, and lactating mothers in local communities of Uganda, particularly in Kibuku District, Budaka District, and Butebo District. To support these vulnerable groups, Kagumu Development Organization, with financial support from partners on the GlobalGiving platform, continues to implement integrated nutrition interventions. This report covers activities conducted from November 2025 to January 2026 under the ongoing five-year program aimed at reducing acute malnutrition in Kibuku District. During this period, 675 local women were mobilized and sensitized in basic child feeding and nutrition practices. The project also provided nutritious food supplements to children suffering from acute malnutrition and trained mothers in the production of locally available nutritious foods. In addition, malnourished children received treatment, pregnant women were given deworming medication, and iron and folic acid supplements were distributed to improve maternal health and birth outcomes.

ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE QUARTER:

• 675 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers trained in nutrition basic feeding practices

• Visited 42 households to assess children with malnutrition

• 58 pregnant women received iron and folic acid supplements.

• 32 malnourished children received treatment

• 162 children dewormed

 Challenges

Grassroots communities in Kibuku District face persistent nutrition challenges despite the availability of local foods. Many lack basic knowledge and skills in proper feeding practices and nutritious food preparation. Project implementation is further constrained by inadequate funding, especially given the high number of beneficiaries. Additionally, most nutrition materials are written in English, creating a need for translation into local languages to improve accessibility and understanding.

Recommendation

Increased funding is essential to strengthen project implementation, reduce child and maternal mortality and morbidity, and improve livelihoods among vulnerable households. Continued financial support will enable the project to effectively serve communities in Kibuku District.
