Summary

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on the planet. Today, a startling 75% of our coral reefs are threatened or gone. The Coral Reef Alliance has designed an innovative conservation blueprint based on cutting-edge science that engages local communities to reduce direct threats to reefs, like land-based pollution, overfishing, and unsustainable tourism practices. We are currently working to expand our programs into Belize to increase our impact in the Western Caribbean.

Challenge

Land-based sources of pollution are a direct threat to coral reefs. Discharged sewage and inadequately treated wastewater from cesspools and septic tanks carry high levels of bacteria, chemicals, and pathogens into the marine environment. Activities like farming, logging, road construction, and mining can produce pollutants such as sediments, fertilizers, and pesticides that run into the ocean when it rains. These runoffs upset the delicate balance coral reef ecosystems needs to survive.

Solution

We utilize science-based strategies to ensure coral reefs have the clean water they need and to protect our coastal environments: - We monitor water quality to understand the nature of the problem - We build and update sustainable wastewater treatment infrastructure by collaborating with governments and communities - We educate community members, local governments, and the tourism industry to employ reef-friendly best practices - We restore and reforest watersheds to create healthy landscapes

Long-Term Impact

We unite communities to save coral reefs. The long-term effects include: Clean Water for Reefs: Improved water quality regulations and effective wastewater infrastructure; monitoring plans that promote recycle and reuse water practices. Healthy Fisheries: Builds effective and financially independent Marine Protected Areas. Regional Leadership: Builds alliances between government officials, businesses and NGOs to influence collaborative efforts and shared best practices.
