Save the Sea Turtles

This week is LittleXLittle at GlobalGiving and your chance to amplify your help for sea turtles. When you donate, GlobalGiving will MATCH half of your online gift of up to $50 (made at this giving page only) to help save a baby sea turtle! With this match, your $10 gift would send an additional $5, or your $50 donation would send an additional $25.

This month, the rainy season will likely begin in Central America. This time of year signals the start of another sea turtle nesting season.

As we prepare for this very busy time of year, we wanted to share how your support for this program is helping sea turtles and local fishing communities to thrive. 

• Over the past year you helped 6842 baby sea turtles to enter the ocean in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Three quarters of these were endangered Galapagos Green Sea Turtle. 

• You helped us to support Nicaraguan college students from the UNAN-Managua in designing and testing a sea turtle egg incubator whereby a hatchery can control for temperature and humidity during the incubation period. The students hope that this incubator can improve sea turtle nest management at locations where hatcheries are not feasible. This invention was part of an innovation and desing contest that brought together engineering and biology students to work with Paso Pacifico as the mentoring nonprofit organization. 

• You supported a workshop in El Salvador to improve management at two sea turtle nurseries.  For this, our sea turtle program coordinatro in Nicaragua traveled by boat across the Gulf of Fonseca to meet with community rangers and sea turtle nursery managers at beaches on the eastern pacific coast of El Salvador.
