The sea turtle dry season

Green turtle release

Dear friends,

The first half of this year was the dry season in western Central America, which is also the season when sea turtle nesting activity wanes. Despite this decrease, you support has enabled our community ranger team in Nicaragua to continue protecting sea turtle nests.

You helped us to release we have protect 21 nests of Galapagos green (16 nests) and olive ridley (6 nests) resulting in an estimated 986 hatchlings headed to the ocean. Thank you for this support.

This month, nesting activity has picked up and we already have received two critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles under our care.

In El Salvador, our sea turtle conservation efforts focused on supporting our partner organization FUNZEL with resources to incentivize the protection of three leatherback sea turtle nests. Unfortunately, none of these nests hatched, likely due to infertility. The sad reality is that there are so few of these turtles in the ocean, that many of the females' eggs go unfertilized.

Deployment has been on hold with the InvestEGGAtor egg, in part due to the high levels of crime in the country where we recently have been planning to deploy the eggs. Despite this, the compelling story of the investEGGator egg is helping to educate thousands of children; just this month Nat Geo Kids sent our story out to its subscribers for their summer reading.

We are excited to see a big uptick in sea turtle nesting activity. We hope that we can successfully protect the nests in situ or in our hatchery. Please considering renewing our gift to the sea turtles this summer.

With gratitude,

Paso Pacifico
