#savethebabies: Help Children Rise out of Poverty

4,908 Cloth Diapers

Huge, heartfelt thanks to you for helping babies! Yesterday was a day of great joy. After months of collecting, sorting, organizing and packing diapers into banana boxes... 4,908 cloth diapers have officially begun their journey to Haiti!

Some of these cloth diapers will be distributed to new Moms when they come in for a well-Mom/well-baby checkup in the Maternal Healthcare Clinic. By having Moms come in to the clinic after they give birth at home, infections can be caught sooner (thus reducing maternal mortality) and the nurses can make sure breastfeeding is going well (thus preventing malnutrition).

Some of these cloth diapers are Tiny Blue, Little Green, & Not-So-Little Yellow diapers headed for the Rescue Center. With around 50 babies in diapers, having them color coded by size will help keep the best size on each baby. That's not all. By having an ample supply of cloth diapers, these babies will have 24 hour diaper coverage! This means better sanitation, cleaner living environment, and happy nannies.

3,900 disposable diapers also left. These will be used in the Intensive Care Unit, and incinerated after use. This means less communicable disease!

That's not all. 1,291 adult personal care products also left. These will be used at the Cholera Treatment Center, to aid in the reduction of the spread of cholera and recovery of those with cholera.

Last, but not least, 552 miscellaneous items also joined the journey. These items include handmade pillowcase dresses, shorts, t-shirts, and blankets.

Off to Ethiopia!

Gaile is on her way to Ethiopia as we speak! With her is a suitcase full of cloth diapers, 49.75 lbs to be exact. Part of her work is in helping orphanages help babies live healthy, to grow, and thrive. Her mission is to help babies be cleand, dry and comfortable by providing quality cloth diapering suppplies, one baby at a time. There are two orphanages she works with, with children that have been abandoned and are up for adoption.

Adoptions have recently closed in Ethiopia (this happens from time to time), which has led to even more babies in group care. One of the most common and challenging needs is diapers. Due to extreme poverty, babies were limited to two changes per day, which led to rashes and other health/sanitation challenges. Diapers are also extremely expensive, and quality cloth diapers are not available.

Gaile will be replenishing supplies at one orphanage, and introducing cloth diapers to another. The last time she delivered diapers, the nannies were so overjoyed. Diapers are so simple, yet the impact is so deep! I cant wait to share with you more of her experiences and the impact that you have made possible.

Hope & Hurricanes

No one has ever made it through life without someone else's help.

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria have caused massive devastation in the U.S. and Caribbean; and we're on a mission to step up and help. A sister diaper bank, with active chapters in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, has become overwhelmed with requests. Because of our amazing network of people like you, we have now partnered with The Rebecca Foundation. We're working together to provide cloth diapers as our piece of Hurricane Relief & Recovery. Federal disaster relief programs do not include diapers, and this is a problem.

Alysha is a loving Mom in Puerto Rico, and is the Chapter President for The Rebecca Foundation. She distributes cloth diaper kits to low income, struggling families. We were able to briefly connect with her, and she is safe. She writes "Here (Rio Grande) all the streets around me are flooded. All the posts are down, billboards, and roofs. It is terrible."

Our Diaper Drop in Haiti also flooded as a result of Irma. No one was hurt, and the town rallied to clean the Rescue Center & ICU. We have another new Diaper Drop, in Cuba. Cuba also experienced significant damage, and 20 diaper kits arrived last week and have been distributed to families in need.

191 cloth diaper kits have already been supplied to The Rebecca Foundation. Distributions have started in Orlando & Houston, and as soon as mail is working again for Alysha, she'll have diapers kits in hand to distribute.

We've started specific Hurricane Relief projects, focused on our Diaper Drops in need of help. We also received an emergency grant from GlobalGiving to expedite diaper relief.
