The first quarter of 2025 has been a busy one with 108 intakes of 33 different species including 33 raptors, 36 parrots, 17 garden/forest birds and 14 water birds. More than half of our raptors were baby barn owls evicted from homes, and as we get further into the season we are hand-raising an additional 37 baby birds including 16 parrot chicks.

During this first quarter we made 34 releases which included 9 parrots, 15 raptors and 3 toucan species.

As promised, we officially launched The Raptor Sanctuary at Belize Bird Rescue (TRS@BBR) which provides true sanctuary for non-releasable birds of prey, prioritizing ethical wildlife welfare and remote education opportunities with minimal human disturbance for these sensitive species. For more details and to support us in our endeavours, especially during these early developmental phases, check out our GG project, or visit our TRS webpage. We also launched dedicated Facebook pages for TRS and The Parrot Sanctuary at Belize Bird Rescue, which as you probably know has grown into a project of its own with 65 non-releasable parrots, most of which are living as close to a wild flock existence as possible at BBR.

We had welcomed a new team member as our PACT-sponsored intern in January, but sadly they had to leave us due to pressures of their University studies, but we rapidly hired a young graduate named Miguel to take over the position, and he is learning fast.

Our field team has literally just started their month in the field to assist with nest protections and to monitor the release of the 16 yellow-head chicks that we hand-raised last year. We are very excited to get the results of their findings and hope to share those with you well before the end of the year.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our monthly newsletter for more stories of our rescues and releases.

As always, we want to thank you for your generosity but also for your moral support of likes, shares and engagement with our social media pages. We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without your support, and so many birds have been given a second chance thanks to you.
