The first quarter of 2022 gave us just 63 intakes, including 20 parrots,16 owls and 9 water birds. The remainder were toucans and different forest species, plus a few adorable doves!
We released 45 birds, including our 18 yellow-headed parrot chicks from the 2021 hand-rearing season. This brings our total of yellow-headed Amazon releases to 169, which in an estimated population of 1200 to 1600 individuals is a respectable percentage for an endangered species.
The early part of the year brought us several familiar faces and it was an absolute joy to see everyone after so long in isolation. We welcomed back our favourite veterinarian Dr Sophie, and biologist and rehabber Samantha Plencner. We were delighted to meet their respective partners Matt and Scott for the first time too. Scott was responsible for that fabulous video that you may have already seen – if not then here’s the link for you!
Also returning after too long of an absence were field biologists Nico Lormand and Darby Moore with their amazing skills of rehab, art, graphic design and photography amongst other things. Lauren Yang from San Diego Zoo made a lightning trip to help with the transfer of the yellow-head chicks she helped to hand-raise in 2021. We were so happy to have Bill Wasserman join us once more, not to mention the wonderful Maryann, who took a bunch of pictures to share with you on social media.
Some of the highlights for the organisation included our new billboard at the Guanacaste roundabout: one of the busiest junctions in the country. We refurbished and predator-proofed another two of our larger enclosures, made a start on the new songbird enclosure and carried out a lot of low-season maintenance on the hatches, doors and water systems – very dull but essential work.
Even though though the first few months of the year tends to be quiet, with visitors and the enclosure work it felt like a busy quarter.
We want to thank you so much as always for your incredible support - our GlobalGiving family are amazing. Your contributions average more than 60% of our total online donations, so you can see we would be sunk without you!
Thank you so much to each and every one of you. Your generosity enables us to help them to Fly Free!
Warmest regards from Nikki and the BBR Team
