Saving lives by closing oxygen access gap in India

Summary

The second wave of CORONA virus has hit India in a devastating manner crumbling its entire health care system. Importantly, it has thrown up a complex supply challenge-making medical oxygen available across this vast nation on urgent basis. It's logistic nightmare and it takes mammoth effort. In spite of this, lives are being lost. With your support, we will address this bottleneck by setting up four decentralized oxygen generation units next to the COVID centers and save 1000 lives in a year.

Challenge

The double mutant virus is posing hitherto unknown challenge. It is a medical state called " happy hypoxia" whereby otherwise healthy individuals suffer from sudden drop in blood oxygen levels without their knowledge till it has reached dangerous levels. Rapid rise in such patients during the second wave created an unexpectedly high demand for medical oxygen. Current oxygen delivery system is costly and requires transport of cylinders over long distances leaving many patients gasping for breath.

Solution

Through this project, we wish to set up on site Oxygen generation systems and Oxygen concentrators at the COVID centers for making medical oxygen available around the clock to the patients critically dependent on this therapy. In addition to 1000 saving lives it will remove the uncertainty and anxiety associated with availability of medical oxygen that is currently prevailing across the country. This solution will be very useful in small hospitals and temporary COVID centers in semi-urban areas.

Long-Term Impact

Key long term positive impact that this project will create 1) It will provide access to medical oxygen in sustainable and reliable way at facilities that can not make use of cylinders 2) On site generation of medical oxygen will become most preferred option. It will spur growth in indigenously made oxygen systems 3) It will build capacity of people in semi-urban, rural areas in operation of Oxygen generation systems 4) It will make small health care centers self sufficient in oxygen supply.
