The Project aims to eliminate hunger and malnutrition of 5,000 starving children by economically empowering their caregivers. This will be done through promotion, training, and financial support of small scale social enterprises among women and the youth in Rachuonyo East Sub-County in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The Project will require US$100,000 annually.
There are currently over 10,000 children in Rachuonyo East Sub-County suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Despite the efforts of their caregivers to feed them with adequate quality foodstuffs, the problem persists due to the extreme poverty experienced by majority of the residents of this Sub-County.
Ogola Community Development Program provides meals to primary school children. The children's women-caregivers and the youth are trained on small business management skills. They are also supported to start and operate non-farm small scale social enterprises to provide regular incomes to their households.
Provision of financial and technical support to 600 women to start and operate micro-enterprises will lead to their active participation in owning and successfully operating nonfarm micro and small scale social enterprises. This will, in the long-run, transform the current prevailing peasant mentality to business orientation, resulting into very high saving rates for further investment. The end product is remarkable economic growth which will enable them create a poverty-free society.
