Challenge

The around 500K people of the historic Rwenzori region of Uganda live miles from quality medical care. This poses a particular problem for birthing mothers and their babies. Only 42% of Ugandans have a skilled attendant present during their labor. 1 in 16 children here die before they are 5 years old. With only 5 beds for every 100K people, Ugandan healthcare is critically stretched. RCRA has been working for years to improve conditions in the Rwenzori with travelling clinics & other resources

Solution

RCRA works to improve child nutrition, educate communities on their health needs, and provide clinics that travel to remote areas. Our tremendous success in reaching locals means we need to build Grace Community Hospital, a 400 bed facility with the only operating theatre in the region. GCH will also provide quality employment opportunities (with 150 healthcare jobs in total in the first year and hundreds more support workers) for our community.

Long-Term Impact

In our first year of activity, we anticipate the lives of 116 women and 70 children will be saved. We expect these numbers to nearly double in the second year. The hospital will be self sustaining, and will provide care for many years to come. The platform for quality healthcare the hospital will provide will stimulate economic growth and associated development in our region.
