Challenge

Cancer is a critical public health problem in Africa. In Nigeria, 70,327 people died of cancer in 2018. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Nigeria, with an estimated 26,310 new cases and 11,564 deaths in 2018 [World Health Organization]. Nigerians also have one of the world's poorest 5-year cancer survival rates. Many poor women die of breast cancer leaving their children and their family behind. 1000 indigent women will benefit from this lifesaving cancer prevention project.

Solution

This project will provide cancer prevention information, cervical cancer screenings, cervical treatment (cryotherapy), clinical breast examination, mammogram, create awareness and engage the community to take action against cancer. 1000 women will be mobilized to walk for 5kilometres in commemoration of World Cancer Day; after the walk, our nurses, doctors, and volunteers will provide cancer screenings. Women diagnosed with abnormalities will be navigated for further diagnosis and treatment.

Long-Term Impact

Through this project, cancer awareness will be increased and late diagnosis will reduce. It will educate 1000 women on cancer prevention with the translated cancer information, they will be trained on breast self-examination and encouraged to train their daughters and other women in their communities. With this strategy, we are building a generation that is cancer aware. Through, World Cancer Day Walk, we will also engage the government through media and advocate for sustainable cancer control.
