"I want to help my people," are the words spoken by the children we sponsor in school. Growing up as the children of displaced refugees in a slum outside of the capital, these children know the harsh realities of poverty. By age 5, they were working in the dangerous conditions of the stone quarry, hoping to earn enough money for their next meal. With the opportunity to attend school, these children can now dream and work towards improving their lives and those of their families.
We strive to sponsor the education for 96 children of displaced refugees living in a slum in Uganda. Without our support, these children would not attend school. Their lives would be spent working in the stone quarry or toiling the land in Northern Uganda. Many unschooled girls become pregnant at a young age and many boys turn to drugs and gangs on the street. By providing an education to these children, we are able to transform a community and give them hope for a brighter future.
We will sponsor the education of 96 impoverished children. A combination of boys and girls will benefit. Half of these children will attend secondary school, which is otherwise prohibitively expensive. Aketowanga Gloria sums of the benefit of sponsorship. "I feel encouraged to work even harder, because I have the opportunity that many do not have. Without schooling, my life would be very difficult... I would not have been able to know that I am a bright person."
By completing their secondary level education, these children will be able to join the workforce and explore less grueling and dangerous forms of work. They will also be able to contribute to the enhancement of their own communities instead of becoming burdens. The children see the current problems of their nation: sickness, impassable roads and blatant poverty. They dream of becoming doctors, nurses and engineers to fix these problems.
