Healthy Habits

Save the Children in Bolivia is pleased to present its fourth quarterly report on the project “Healthy Habits for Kids”. We are extremely thankful to announce that thanks to our donors’s support, over the past months, we were able to expand the reach of our School Health and Nutrition Program. We are now implementing the program in 148 primary schools in the city of El Alto (department of La Paz), Trinidad and San Andrés (department of Beni) and Cochabamba (department of Cochabamba). Additionally, we are also carrying out advocacy work in the municipalities of La Paz and Oruro.

A key event during the past month has been the International Handwashing Day which was celebrated on October 14th. Under the motto “Let’s make Handwashing a habit to live well”, children from different schools gathered together in a major square in the city of La Paz to celebrate the day and to promote adequate handwashing techniques. The event was organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Water, with the participation of the Health Ministry, Control Authorities of Portable Water and Basic Sanitation, UNICEF, Save the Children International, Foundation Sumaj Huasi, among others. The Vice Minister of Soil Watering and Water Resources, highlighted the importance of handwashing to safeguard the health of the population and celebrated the children’s initiatives to promote the adequate use of wáter resources and appropriate handwashing techniques.

Another highlight of these past three month has been the “First National Meeting to Share and Dissiminate successful Experiences and Strategies regarding Healthy Habits for Kids” which was held on November 17th in the city of La Paz. Authorities from different municipalities, school directors, profesors, parents and children of our programs from Cochabamba, Oruro, La Paz, El Alto, Trinidad and San Andres participated in this event which presented a space to share successful experiences and strategies to ensure healthy habits for kids. The children showed a lot of interest in listening and learning about how other regions addressed topics such as handwashing and menstrual higiene. The strategy that was highly celebrated by parents and children, was the OLDER SISTER strategy (Estrategia de la Hermana Mayor) as it presents a proactive way of addressing the topic of menstruation which is despite its importance, still a taboo within the Bolivian society.
