Mamu, 12 years old. He currently studies at Children's Voice in Level 1 at Virunga centre. SHe said:
I was kicked out of home when I was almost 8. At the time, I was studying in 3rd grade in teacher Jeannine's class.
My uncle's wife accused me of being a witch.
I left and wandered the streets, afraid, but I found friends. And that was in the gutter. For the last 4 years, I've lived on the streets of Rond-Point BDEGL, Birere and Kin Shop.
Street violence is terrible. I was raped and beaten. I took hemp and patex. I had to steal to find food. Sometimes we didn't eat because the bigger kids took everything.
People of good will, who came to the place where we were and begged us to leave streets and go with them. One woman's name was Mama Adeo. Now she is like my mum. When I see her, I'm happy.
I'm going to continue my studies. I want to be a teacher. I am grateful and thank Children's Voice and its partners for saving my life.
