School Scholarships for Vulnerable Youth

Location: Goma, North Kivu Province , Eastern DRC

Progress of our project :

In the concern of providing education to abused and neglected and unaccompanied children living in the streets who have little or no literacy skills, we offer now formal schooling and vocational training. The children from 9 to 14 years old are accepted into an accelerated primary school where they complete two years of curriculum within one year. The whole primary cycle is done in 3 years instead of 6.

Youth ages 14-17 years old who have not gone to primary school are accepted into a vocational training program accompanied with literacy courses. 

- Story of beneficiaries:

Henriette is 17 years old. She is in sewing workshop training.

 “Now I am a tailor. I know to make clothes. I start a new life. I will forget what happened to me”. In july 2010, I was in Lubero territory. My mother and I, we went to the land. We were taken by May May militias to the bush during 2 weeks. They raped me and my mother too. It was terrible. When we were free, my mother was chased by my father. I went with here to Rushuru hospital. After 2 months we went to Goma town to my grandmother. There, my mother died. My life had no sense. One day a chief of quarter sent me to children’s Voice. And I started this training. I am proud and happy. I will create a workshop for myself as a tailor”.

- Accomplishments:

Actually, 10 classes with 566 children: 296 girls and 270 boys; 3 workshops training: in mechanic, sewing and cooking with 124 teenagers: 86 girls and 38 boys. We provide to all of them health care by our dispensary and a psychological assistance.

- Impact:

The project helps 609 children when we planned to help 384. It is a 180% outcome. The project helps 382 girls, when girls have not the chance to go to school because customs are like this.Very soon most of them will go to secondary school and others in workshops.

15 donors provided 3271.63 USD of 20000 USD requested for education, safe and healthy environment for 384 vulnerable streets children living in the township of Goma. It is the benefit of the community of Goma and around. It is wonderful.

- Upcoming or past events

Many children are living on the street because of the political, economic and social problems. They are abused and neglected and have little or no literacy skills, now they will have education and protected from street violence.  They are lucky.
