Yengat Birhan Charity Organization focuses on supporting children by addressing key challenges in education, health, and nutrition. The organization adopts a holistic approach to nurture children’s academic success, personal growth, and overall well-being through collaborative efforts and innovative interventions. These efforts are grounded in fostering resilience, community collaboration, and building sustainable systems that cater to the diverse needs of vulnerable children while integrating health, education, and basic needs into a unified framework
Major Achievements
1) Educational Support:
Tutorial classes in English, Mathematics, and Ethics with Life Skills were regularly conducted four days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) for local students from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Additionally, to accommodate children traveling from remote areas, classes were provided every other Saturday from 9: 00Am – 12: 00 noon. These sessions were led by skilled teachers English and Mathematics taught by private school educators, and Ethics with Life Skills facilitated by a trainer from Great Commission. Summer programs and essential school supplies, such as exercise books, pens, and other materials, were also provided to ensure students were well-prepared for their studies and personal growth.
2) Nutrition Support:
To address food security and improve dietary intake, 1littre cooking oil and 5kilogram wheat flour were distributed quarterly to children and their families. Snacks were also continuously provided during tutorial classes to sustain students' energy and concentration.
3) Health and Hygiene Support:
Hygiene items, including 3 pic laundry soap 250mg and 250ml hair oil, were distributed consistently per quarter to promote cleanliness and well-being among students. Health insurance for all 137 children was fully covered by birr 1500 for each child, ensuring access to essential medical care. Additionally, 3 pack sanitary pads were distributed for 44 girls and health education sessions were conducted for both children and families, fostering awareness of good health practices.
4) Sanitation and Cleanliness:
Cleaning and sanitation materials, such as liquid soap and Hand sanitizers, were supplied to maintain a hygienic environment in classrooms and counseling spaces. This is facilitated to encourage personal hygiene practices among students and staff.
5) Summer Programs
Specialized summer programs were conducted to support students’ academic development and life skills during the summer season. The program included age-appropriate sessions focused on learning, ethics, and extracurricular activities. Through these 8-hour weekly sessions, students not only enhanced their academic capabilities but also developed essential life skills such as time management and effective study habits.
These initiatives have not only supported the immediate needs of children but also contributed to their long-term well-being and empowerment. Yengat Birhan remains committed to addressing the evolving challenges faced by vulnerable children in the community.
Challenges Faced
The organization faced substantial challenges due to inflation and rising costs of educational materials, health supplies, and logistics, which strained its resources. Budget limitations required careful prioritization and resource allocation to ensure the continued delivery of essential services. Strengthened community partnerships and strategic planning have been critical in overcoming these barriers, but the need for diversified funding remains a pressing priority.
Lessons Learned
Þ Integrated Approaches: Combining education, health, and nutrition interventions amplified the overall impact.
Þ Partnerships: Collaborating with different stakeholders extended the reach of initiatives.
Þ Monitoring and Adaptation: Regular follow-ups ensured the effectiveness of programs.
Conclusion
The Yengat Birhan Charity Organization has made significant strides in improving the lives of vulnerable children through education, health, and nutritional support. These efforts empower children to thrive academically and personally. The organization remains committed to expanding its impact through innovative approaches and partnerships.
