Introduction and Overview
Yengat Birhan Charity Organization has made notable job in empowering needy school children by addressing major challenges and fostering resilience, the organization continues to enhance the well-being of children and women and their families. Moving forward, Yengat Birhan is dedicated to promoting sustainable change through innovative approaches and strong collaborative partnerships.
The main Focus Areas for the school’s children Include:
Academic Assistance, Character development class with snack, Health (curative and preventive care), Food and Nutritional Aid with Medical Insurance Coverage, Psychological support and providing especial support for the very needy students like weekly food support and house rent.
Yengat Birhan Charity Organization adopts a holistic, child-centered approach that combines educational support, health initiatives, and nutritional assistance to address the varied needs of vulnerable children and their families. The organization currently serves 51 school-aged children along with their mothers and households because of budget constraints
Major Achievements
Under Educational Support:
In this quarter from June to August, 2026, the character development classes delivered by two individuals, including a Yengat Birhan Charity Organization staff member. English speaking classes provided by our staff, as many of the students do not yet have a strong foundation in the subject. We hope this will help facilitate a more integrated character transformation and development approach, further enhancing the students’ academic achievement, personal growth, and moral foundation. under this program we taught them character development courses by using different techniques like group discussions and presentations to help them boost their confidence to speak in public. we monitored some absent students and did personal counseling to better understand their root cause and help them. we also rewarded the very best children depending on their class attendance, their character change and class performances to motivate them more on becoming a better citizen.
Part of School children support,
On the month of July, we delivered summer life skill Training for the children dividing them into two groups by their age groups. The topics were: self-Awareness, the power of vision and purpose driven life, personal responsibility and Addiction. The program was given by two trainers three half day pre week and it included plays like football and volleyball match and other games too. We also provided a special snack throughout the one-month program and special closing ceremony.
On the month of August, we refunded the school registration fee for every school child for the new school calendar year as per our budget and provided school bag for the he children in order to use in the coming new Ethiopian school year. The support was provided to reduce the financial burden on vulnerable families and ensure that children could enroll in school on time.
Under individual support, as part of our organization's commitment to improving the well-being of vulnerable children and their families, monthly financial assistance of 3,000 Ethiopian Birr was provided for two single mothers who are facing severe economic hardship. The monthly support was intended to help mothers cover essential household expenses, including food, part of house rent, utilities, transportation, and other basic necessities. The mothers reported that the financial support enabled them to prioritize their children's well-being by maintaining regular meals, preventing the risk of eviction due to unpaid rent, and meeting other urgent household needs. The assistance also reduced stress and anxiety among caregivers, allowing them to focus more on providing proper care for their children.
Health and Nutrition support
As part of our support for children attending tutorial sessions, Yengat Birhan Charity Organization provided snacks twice a week during tutorial days. The purpose of providing snacks was to help children remain attentive, active, and engaged throughout the learning sessions.
Providing snacks also encouraged children to attend the tutorial sessions regularly and helped reduce distractions caused by hunger. This support contributed to creating a more comfortable learning environment where children could participate effectively and focus on their studies.
Psychosocial support
As part of its commitment to promoting the overall well-being of vulnerable children and their families, Yengat Birhan Charity Organization continued to provide psychosocial support services throughout the reporting period. The organization offered individual counseling sessions to mothers experiencing emotional, social, and economic challenges. These counseling services helped women cope with stress, strengthen their emotional resilience, and improve their ability to care for themselves and their families.
In addition, children who required extra attention due to behavioral, emotional, or social difficulties received age-appropriate counseling and guidance. Through regular follow-up and individualized support, the organization worked closely with each child to improve behavior, enhance self-esteem, develop positive social skills, and encourage healthy emotional development. Parents and caregivers were also guided on how to better support their children's growth and well-being.
The psychosocial support interventions have contributed to creating healthier family relationships and improving the mental, emotional, and social well-being of both mothers and children. The organization continues to monitor the progress of each beneficiary and remains committed to ensuring that families lead healthier, safer, and more stable lives in all aspects of their well-being.
This ongoing support has strengthened the beneficiaries' capacity to overcome challenges, make positive life choices, and actively participate in their families and communities, contributing to sustainable positive change.
Organizational Management
Yengat Birhan has been strengthening its organizational capacity, by asking professionals assistance to give us a volunteer service on different issues. As we all know, YBCO has 7 board members and responsible for the overall strategic direction and organizational policy. The Board of directors, executive director and other members who elected as a member expected to participate on the meeting and decision.
Obstacle / constraints during the implementation of the project, the organization encountered challenges that affected the smooth delivery of planned activities.one of the challenges was the continuous rise of goods due to inflation. This reduced the purchasing power of the allocated budget, making it difficult to meet all planned targets within the available resources.
Another challenge was limited number of staff members which made the small team to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. This affected the efficiency and timeliness of few services delivery.
Lessons Learnt:
The staff shortage during this period shows that fundraising has to be done as one of the important activities in order to provide a better support to both students and their moms as well as to have enough and appropriate staff to do the planned activities in the healthy way.
