Education means more than just learning of academic skills. If we help children feel more confident about themselves, then they will be in stronger position to be able to able to cope with inevitable stress of life. This is particularly true of deaf children who are subject to huge stigma and challenges in places like Tanzania.
It is the teacher's role to use all means such as teaching aids, television, computers to help hearing impaired persons develop and build upon understandings, skills, knowledge and attitudes which they bring with them into school and which are essential element of the education process.
Visual, language and reading are very important in teaching of skills. The role of media is extremely important in order to bring about attitudinal changes in the society.
For the deaf, through watching television programs and customised software to teach Tanzanian Sign Language we can
- give them information about the government policies, welfare, schemes, concessions etc.
- show plays, films and documentaries, including positive role models of deaf people.
- show relevant daily news in the country and worldwide.
So for hearing impaired students such as those at Matumbulu, having access to such resources has transformed their learning.
Thank you for your generosity.
