Summary

This project will enable students in our community schools in rural Ghana to plant school gardens and fruit trees. The gardens provide an opportunity for environmental education and learning about sustainable farming, while also producing nutritious foods for our school lunch program.

Challenge

Rising temperatures and declining rainfalls are contributing to food shortages in our partner communities in rural Ghana. The 400 children in our schools face malnutrition as well as uncertain futures in communities where nearly all adults are subsistence farmers. Additionally, because of their family responsibilities like gathering water and wood, children have few opportunities to play or enjoy the outdoors.

Solution

Our school gardens provide many benefits to children and their communities, including: Environmental 'hands-on' education that is fun for young students; Vegetables and fruit for the school lunch program, increasing child nutrition; Demonstrations of sustainable farming for families, nearly all of whom are subsistence farmers; The fruit trees provide shade and reduce soil erosion in villages that have been severely impacted by climate and rain changes.

Long-Term Impact

Learning about sustainable farming, while also helping to raise food for lunches is very empowering for students. This program improves child nutrition and health, increases attendance and enthusiasm for learning, enhances teachers skills, and demonstrates to families how they can continue to farm and help the environment. We hope the success of our school garden programs will inspire other schools in the region to implement similar projects.
