First of all, we hope you are all having a good winter.
Once again, we would like to express our gratitude for your donations, which are absolutely necessary to continue and broaden the impact of science dissemination on our society.
This time, we are pleased to share our recent experience in Juvenalia, where lots and lots of children and youngsters enjoyed playing scientist for one day. This is the 9th time Apadrina la Ciencia has taken part in the traditional children and youth leisure fair in Ifema (Madrid), of which we feel really proud and grateful.
On this occasion, our volunteers, who are worth their price in gold, have run the different experiments placing the children and teenagers’ participation at the center of the activity. More than 3.200 enthusiastic children and 30 volunteers spent their time at the Apadrina la Ciencia’s stand giving the best of themselves.
First-hand concepts such as density, mass and volume were made accessible and easy to learn with the gradient sweet rainbow or the chromatography technique since children got involved in the experiments from the very beginning. While they carefully followed the explanations given by the volunteer, they could touch and manipulate the materials and laboratory elements that we brought. Another stimulating experiment was the mutant flies, which really aroused their curiosity as participants were able to use the microscope and watch how flies develop at different stages of their life cycles. Alive wild type and mutant flies (curly wings, white eyes, brown body…) were available to look at.
Thanks to your support, Apadrina la Ciencia was able to offer an additional leisure activity: the storytelling of the solidarity book Women Stars in Science, whose writer attended the fair to tell our children the story of six contemporary Spanish female scientists who have done a great job to improve our lives. The young public really loved it.
Using their creativity and imagination, children show a strong ability to ask clever questions like “how can the same cell mutate into a fly, a dog or a person?” or “when did you find out that you wanted to become a scientist?” They also look astonished to find out how much science can do for us, as in the case of the first exoskeleton for children, and how it can help them to make good decisions and contribute to advanced society.
From Apadrina la Ciencia, we strongly believe that these workshops contribute to making science visible and attractive to make an impact on society while enriching our children and teenagers’ practical knowledge. We are convinced that more than one scientist will “come out” after the experience.
