Scrambling for Good: 1,137 eggstra dozen eggs

The ongoing support from GlobalGiving donors for food purchases cannot be overstated. By helping provide key staples such as eggs, your generosity strengthens our hampers and makes them more complete and nourishing for the people we serve.

Food hampers provided by Edmonton’s Food Bank are essential to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Because of donations like yours, we are able to offer food thoughtfully and creatively, while also supporting our neighbours in ways that go beyond food alone.

Over the past five years, the demand for food assistance in Edmonton has increased dramatically. In 2020, Edmonton’s Food Bank served an average of 21,385 people each month through our hamper programs. By 2025, that number had risen to more than 43,000 people monthly which is a staggering reflection of the economic pressures facing households across our community. This growth has required us to continually adapt our programs to meet urgent needs, while also responding to the deeper, underlying causes of food insecurity.

Many people access food hampers on a short-term or as-needed basis, we are seeing an increase in individuals and families who rely on our services more regularly. For these clients, our team engages in sensitive, respectful conversations to better understand their circumstances and help connect them to additional supports. Food is often the most immediate need, but it is rarely the only challenge people are facing.

To create space for these meaningful discussions, we offer dedicated appointment times in our Pantry. During these sessions, our team takes the time to understand each client’s unique situation, explore available options, and connect them with resources such as government programs, tax filing assistance, affordable food options, collective kitchens, and our Beyond Food Program. Our goal is not only to ensure no one goes hungry, but to help individuals and families build greater stability and reduce their reliance on emergency food support over time.

Following these conversations, clients are invited to select food for themselves and their families in our Pantry, which operates like a small grocery store. This model allows people to make choices that best meet their needs and preferences. Available items include pantry staples, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, and, thanks to supporters like those through GlobalGiving, highly valued items such as eggs.

Edmonton’s Food Bank remains committed to meeting immediate food needs while also addressing the root causes of hunger in our community. Our Pantry program is one step toward that goal, ensuring every client feels respected, supported, and empowered on their journey toward food security.

Edmonton’s Food Bank food-raises, fundraises, and friend-raises in the community to serve vulnerable community members. We do not receive funding for programs, services, and food purchases from any level of government. Because of generous donors, our services continue uninterrupted.

The volume of need continues to rise in our community. Over the last five years, our monthly client average through the hamper programs has risen from 21,176 people (2020) to an average of 43,627 people (2025) monthly. This represents an increase of 106% in five years.

While we did not raise1,137 extra eggs, this was our first real campaign with local, external promotion. We did raise $407.47 which is equivalent to purchasing 119 dozen eggs. One hundred and nineteen dozen eggs we did not have before. This is still success in our opinion. We also didn’t realize that Canadian tax receipts are not issued; therefore, we developed a way to communicate with our donors and took care of the charitable tax receipts after.

Funds raised have helped with our food purchases, specifically eggs. We are pleased to share Sarah and Daniel’s story of the impact seen from these donations:

When Sarah and Daniel picked up their first food hamper, they expected a few cans and boxes to get them through the week. With two kids under 12, a grandparent at home, and rising costs stretching every dollar, they were simply hoping for a little help. As they unpacked the hamper at their kitchen table, they unpacked frozen meat, cans of soup with other pantry staples, potatoes, carrots, apples, and even a dozen eggs!

“I couldn’t believe how thoughtful it was,” Sarah shared. “It wasn’t just canned goods, it was everything we needed to cook healthy meals together. It gave us a sense of normal again. Thank you.”
