It’s hard to believe that the summer is over and we are approaching the end of 2022. Although the summer camp season was shortened due to the early start of public schools this year, we were able to make the most of the short time. We offered an abbreviated SEA Creatures program with visits to other summer camp programs to engage students in environmental activities.
We were excited to offer the first year of a new summer program called the Environmental Changemakers Corps. This program is geared to early high school students and gives the participants the opportunity to learn about and participate in the myriad of environmental programs on St. Croix. Students visited locations such as the Southgate Coastal Reserve, Sandy Point, Salt River, The Nature Conservancy’s Coral Lab, and Sejah Farm. Students finished their experience with an advocacy project that addressed an environmental issue or threat that they learned about during their experience. This program exceeded our expectations, especially for a first-year program, and we look forward to offering it again next year and then potentially expanding it to include an afterschool element.
Environmental Education isn’t just for the summer! During the school year, Olivia Walton, SEA’s education coordinator, is working directly with schools to develop new programs and reach more students. We are especially excited to be able to offer in-person field trips for the first time in a few years, and are looking forward to the return of the Earth Day Ecofair in April.
We appreciate your ongoing support of SEA’s education programs. We could not offer these life-changing programs without your help.
