We are making history by bringing the award-winning Living Seawall technology to South Africa. This project focuses on the installation of 100 specialized habitat panels in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. This high-traffic area serves as a global stage for marine conservation. Each $550 panel provides a home for indigenous South African species, creating a vertical reef in the Atlantic Ocean. This is a landmark collaboration between local stakeholders and global experts.
Cape Town's vibrant Atlantic coastline is under constant pressure from urban development. Traditional harbor walls at the V&A Waterfront are necessary for infrastructure and while they have done lots to protect our local ecosystem it's time for the next chapter. Together we want to help protect and invite more ecosystems back to our harbours and this will be done through the new innovative Living Sea Wall. The first on African Coastlines!
The solution is a nature-based retrofit. We are installing 100 habitat panels designed to mimic the natural rocky shores of the Cape. In partnership with V&A, 2 Oceans Aquarium & Rhodes University, we will conduct rigorous scientific research to monitor the return of marine life. This project turns a functional wall into a living laboratory and a public gallery. The panels provide the physical complexity needed for seaweed, fish, and invertebrates to colonize and thrive in the heart of the city.
This installation will serve as a permanent conservation landmark in South Africa, inspiring other coastal authorities to adopt sustainable practices. The project provides local employment through installation and ongoing research opportunities for South African marine scientists. By sponsoring a panel for $550, donors leave a lasting legacy on the Atlantic coast. This project proves that urban development and nature can coexist, creating a healthier, more biodiverse Waterfront.
