Second Chance for 1,000 Teen Moms to Attend School

Second Chance for 1,000 Teen Moms to Attend School

Summary

In Nigeria, an estimated 1 in 4 girls becomes a mother before age 19, with most forced to drop out of school. Many never return due to stigma, lack of childcare, and poverty. This project will support 1,000 teen mothers with tuition, books, uniforms, and safe childcare, allowing them to re-enter school and complete their education. Urgent action is needed as thousands of teen moms remain excluded from education, limiting their future and trapping them in poverty cycles.

Challenge

Nigeria has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Africa, with UNICEF reporting that nearly 23% of girls aged 15-19 are mothers. Most drop out of school due to stigma, financial hardship, or lack of childcare. Without education, they are trapped in poverty, face higher risks of unemployment, and are more vulnerable to exploitation. Many teen moms want to continue learning but have no support system to make this possible.

Solution

This project will re-enroll 1,000 teen mothers in secondary school and provide tuition, learning materials, and uniforms. It will also establish childcare centers near schools so young mothers can attend classes without worrying about their children's safety. Mentoring sessions with teachers and trained counselors will build confidence and reduce stigma. With education restored, teen mothers will have the chance to complete school and gain employable skills.

Long-Term Impact

Educated teen mothers are more likely to secure stable jobs, delay future pregnancies, and raise healthier children. By helping 1,000 girls return to school, this project reduces poverty in entire families. Their children will grow up with educated mothers who value learning, creating a ripple effect for generations. Communities benefit as educated women participate in the workforce and civic life, breaking cycles of exclusion and poverty among marginalized families.
