When Les Amis de Hampaté Bâ began offering scholarships to underprivileged girls 16 years ago, many of the students faced significant academic challenges. Coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, they often lacked the foundational skills needed to succeed in school. Our goal was to provide them with equal opportunities, comparable to those of students from more privileged environments. However, it quickly became clear that bridging this gap would require more than just financial support.
We understood that two essential elements were missing in these girls’ daily lives: academic support and proper nutrition. To address the first need, we introduced tutoring programs designed to help them better understand their lessons. Many of the girls came from illiterate families and did not have access to electricity at home, making it nearly impossible for them to study effectively outside school hours.
We were fortunate to find dedicated and inspiring tutors who not only helped the students academically but also motivated them to believe in their potential. This alone led to a noticeable improvement. We also organized small group sessions after school, allowing the girls to collaborate, support one another, and progress together at their own pace.
However, we soon encountered an unexpected obstacle. Tutoring required the girls to stay longer at school, extending their already demanding days. As a result, many of them became tired and hungry, struggling to maintain their concentration during these extra hours of learning.
Recognizing this issue, we came up with what turned out to be a simple yet powerful solution: providing a second meal to those attending tutoring sessions. This additional nourishment gave the girls the energy they needed to stay focused and engaged. It also helped them feel cared for and supported in a more holistic way.
The impact was immediate and remarkable. What started as a practical response quickly became a transformative initiative. This project came to be known as the “Food for Thought” program. It not only addressed hunger but also reinforced the importance of combining education with well-being.
The results spoke for themselves. Girls who once struggled began to thrive academically. In subjects often considered challenging, such as mathematics and physics, many scholarship recipients started to excel. Some even rose to the top of their classes, demonstrating confidence, determination, and joy in their achievements.
Looking ahead, the long-term effects of this initiative are equally encouraging. Many of our scholarship students, empowered by the support they received, have continued their studies with funding from our association. Today, several of them have secured employment in pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals, contributing positively to their communities.
We are deeply grateful to all our donors whose generosity has made this journey possible. Their support has played a crucial role in providing these girls with equal opportunities and in helping them build brighter futures.
Thank you for your continued commitment. Together, we can ensure that these girls remain in school, persevere in their studies, and access meaningful employment opportunities.
Let them shine, let them shine, let them shine !
