THE EDUTAINMENT APPROACH – ENTERTAINMENT AND EDUCATION
At Hampaté Bâ Middle School in Niamey, Mrs Moussa, a dynamic Home Economics teacher, leads the girls’ empowerment class and organizes various activities using the ‘edutainment’ approach – with skits, dramas, dance and visits to other schools. HIV/AIDS and hygiene-sanitation were the topics the girls tackled this month.
“My biggest achievement this year has been giving these girls a sense of pride and enthusiasm for education,” says Mrs Moussa. “We need to continue this momentum to motivate more girls to complete their middle schooling and continue to high school.”
Mr Baro, the school principal, adds: “Talking about the benefits of education and female role models is also very important.”
Echoing this aspiration, Nabila and Saratou, attending Mrs Moussa’s class at Hampaté Bâ, say they hope to become members of parliament after completing their education, in order to help girls and women in their country.
“Education is very important,” say the girls. “It is important because when you are staying at home, you are not aware of anything. But good education will lead to a good future and help our families have a better life.”
“Though the girls’ education component is very challenging in Niger, it is always motivating to see such positive examples in our school,” says the proud principal of Hampaté Bâ.
