Challenge

In the Anosy region, 16% of children complete primary and only 2.5% complete lower secondary education. Cramped conditions, unprotected water sources, zero handwashing conditions, and no menstrual hygiene management (MHM) exacerbates absenteeism and increases disease transmission. Teachers live far away and receive low pay furthering absenteeism and quality of education. Specifically, the Sarisambo Primary & Lower Secondary School have a combined 7 classrooms and 5 bathrooms for 726 students.

Solution

Project Sekoly will works to alleviate these barriers by improving the education and WASH infrastructure for the 726 students and 27 teachers annually in two schools by the following: (1) Repair & construct latrines so that the student-to-latrine ratio is below the national ministry guidelines of 50:1. (2) Repair and construct four hand washing stations, and two MHM facilities, and (3) construct two rainwater harvesting systems, each providing a supply of clean water.

Long-Term Impact

Additionally, the project will (1) construct a new school building and six fully furnished classrooms to create a safe learning environment, (2) empower communities to sustain improvements by establishing management committees and training teachers to lead WASH education, and (3) construct a teachers' house at each school to minimize teacher absenteeism, attract quality teachers, and support their livelihoods.
